Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer, the Senior Director/VP of BESS Project Development will serve as a leader for battery energy storage development activities in the New York City metro region. This role is execution focused for an individual ready to step into an existing development portfolio and advance projects to completion. This includes managing the New York City permitting process on brownfield sites, supporting finalization of the interconnection process, collaborating on BESS design and engineering at existing power plants, and ensuring all pre-construction readiness is completed to project finance standards. This role will interface across the company—working closely with the interconnection, design, engineering, procurement, finance, policy, origination, legal and construction and teams—to ensure projects are technically and commercially viable, fully permitted, and ready for construction.
You will also help shape the company’s broader energy storage development activities across the existing 4GW portfolio. This is a high-impact role with significant visibility and influence.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the full development lifecycle of BESS projects (standalone or hybrid), including, feasibility, permitting, environmental reviews, and community engagement.
- Conduct or oversee project diligence related to, permitting risks, and environmental constraints.
- Coordinate with internal teams (engineering, finance, legal, policy) to optimize/validate project design, financial models, and risk assessments.
- Work with origination teams to match BESS projects with offtake opportunities and RFPs.
- Lead outreach to landowners, community stakeholders, permitting agencies, and local governments.
- Represent the company at industry events, regulatory hearings, and public forums.
- Manage a growing team of energy storage developers and.
- Establish project development best practices, workflows, and KPIs to drive optimal project development performance.
- Serve as mentor and thought leader within the development group.
Your Profile
- 7-10 years of experience in energy infrastructure development, with at least 3–5 years in utility-scale BESS development. Experience in NYISO / NYC Metro area is preferred.
- Brownfield development experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex energy projects from conception through NTP or COD.
- Strong understanding of battery technologies (e.g., lithium-ion, flow), storage applications, interconnection processes, and ISO/RTO market participation (e.g. NYISO).
- Extensive experience with permitting (federal, state, and local), environmental assessments, and stakeholder management.
- Exceptional project management skills with the ability to manage multiple high-value projects simultaneously.
- Ability to interpret technical studies, grid analyses, financial models, and legal documents.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interface with technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
- Willingness to travel up to 50 % or as needed.
